Use it up!

I love a good SC kit but every so often I'm a little flummoxed as to what to do with the little bits and pieces that are left over. Enter a Crop & Create challenge that would kill two birds with one stone-kill a few leftover supplies & enter me in a challenge during the crop weekend at the end of September.

The challenge was to use letters in an original way.  I started out wanting to create a mask using these wood veneer alphas from an older Studio Calico kit. I wanted to lay out the letters in a grid and mist them, leaving a space for my title, 'us', with the original letters unmisted. I did that but didn't like it. The title didn't stand out the way I wanted it to. So, I used glue dots to stick the letters I misted down over the masked areas and framed my title using a little chipboard piece, covering it with some washi tape.

I used lots of pink and reds in this layout despite it being a page about my family-which consists of two boys & me. I love the chevron paper and the yellow hexagon-both from an old Studio Calico kit. My journaling is hidden away, as usual, on the grey tag.

The best part about this layout is that I won! I WON. And guess who judged?! Kelly Purkey my friends. I was elated that she chose my layout and thought it was worthy of a win. I admire her style and eye so much so this was a real coup for me. It was the cherry on top of an already amazing weekend!

As for my Studio Calico kits-I killed two kits at the Crop & Create event. Score.

Speaking of kits, I have a class coming up at The Paperie this coming Saturday. I'm going to give you instructions and examples of how to create your own kits whether it's using your current supplies or new ones that you pick up in the store. You'll also walk away with a few supplies that you can use to create your own original kit as well as a PDF that you can take home to create your own kits. Imagine how easy the crop would be in November if you had kits all packed and ready to go! Come hang out and learn a few new things this Saturday and get ready for a productive cropping weekend in November!
